Autism and Home school

Up to this point we have tried a couple of different approaches to educating our
child. Public school did not work although the teachers were very helpful and
supportive. The problem was the number of kids, too much going on. Then we went
to private school about 80% of the issues cleared up. Each year it got a little
better. This year we found out our the scholarship would not cover the school.
That left us in a bit of a bind but my husband came up with an idea to home
school. At first I was worried about filling his needs. We sat down and went
step by step on ways to address each of my concerns. For the past year I had
been doing extra classes with our son at home. I was familiar with the material
and what techniques work best for him. I had also helped out with other children
at his school with autism. This gave me a better working knowledge of the
logistics of the process. The curriculum would need to be one he was already
familiar with. I had a lot of great help and direction from his teacher as well.
His therapies would continue as always. Then my biggest concern was socializing.
I am trying a home school group that meets once a week for field trips that rang
from park get together to tours of a chocolate factory. These children do not
have the same disabilities but so far it’s a great mesh. I’m sure more
adjustments will be needed.
